Critical Reflection on topic given - New Technology 2

Is there a possibility to reshape the new culture today via new technology, How?

There is a possibility to reshape the new culture via new technology as "Impossible is Nothing" from Adidas... ... Well actually is "Nothing is Impossible" XD Anyway, we can take an example like cellphones.

At olden days, people used home telephone. You can't call at anywhere except at home. But now, majority of the people use cellphones, almost 80% above of the people. And why is that so? Firstly, cellphones is portable and good mobility, you can bring it at anywhere, anytime, just to keep it in your pocket. Secondly is it becomes something private, you can keep your notes, favourite musics and video clips, and messages. Besides, it has multi-function, you can listen to music, watch videos, play games, photo-shooting, video- recording, surfing internet, and most significantly, a social tool. With all these factors, cellphones wipe out the home-used telephone, become an era of cellphones. You can see all over the places selling cellphones, cellphone network with better services, people holding cellphones at ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!! It becomes a CULTURE!!

What kind of culture influences through technology can you see from today's world?

The most significant and obvious culture is Japanese Anime and Manga. As you can see, because of the high-speed internet connection and can be easily installed in your home, people around the world started to stay in the house or become a home-sick. What do they do? They watch the most popular culture, Anime (animation) and reading Manga (comic).

Anime and Manga has a great influence in the world. People started to speak Japanese, dress and be like Japanese, day-dreaming, watch anime and manga at all time, drawing manga, be an animator or manga-ka (comic artist), listen and sing Japanese songs, become an Otaku, and etc etc etc... ...

These 4 examples are taken from website which are Manga, Cosplay, Otaku's room, Otaku and a normal person difference, and Anime respectively.

Critical Reflection on topic given - Media Imperialism 2

What are others example of Media Imperialism?

Take our country, Malaysia, as an example. Our newspaper control are quite strict because of local rules and regulations. We can't post any racism news or article in newspaper because it may cause some chaotic situation in Malaysia. The government controls the news flow and put certain rules on it.

Another example is... when there is a huge celebration or event like National Day, all TV broadcasting are not allow to broadcast any other program except for the live National Day broadcast.

It is true that media industries gain lots of profits for the country, but the monopoly rules over the industry and also the media information have been limited.

Critical Reflection on topic given - Media Imperialism 1

This week class is talk about Media Imperialism.

What is Media Imperialism anyway? Well... it is a phenomena of a big and wealthy media industry or company control or monopoly over the media industries.

This phenomena we can see at Canada, Italy, and even Britain. Take Britain for an example, British Broadcasting Channel (BBC) operates media-imperialism-ly. Before you bought a TV, you must own an license from BBC that need to be bought annually, even you don't wanna watch BBC. It shows that such huge media company have too much power to control the country and people.

Besides, the Third World receives media information from West country because they too rely on them. The West media destroys the local media and they even selling their own products by advertising simply because of the local's fewer regulatory control in media.

Critical Reflection on topic given - Tetrad of Media 2

The technology or media I gonna choose is Facebook.

It enhances of the meeting of people around the world, they can chat or know each other without traveling around the places, we can just do it at home. By surfing the internet Facebook, you can know the people around the world by just clicking.

What does it make obsolete? Well... Facebook contains chatbox and email functions, we need not call over or sending letters.

Facebook retrieves the sense of community and socializing. Now we can see almost everyone using Facebook in order to keep in contact with others.

What will it become if it is over-extended? Erm... there will be less privacy and become a waste of time because people started to sit in front of the computer whole day by just clicking Facebook only. Seriously...

Critical Reflection on topic given - Tetrad of Media 1

Tetrad of Media is to ask 4 questions and what will the effect be of the media, which are ENHANCES (what does it extend?), OBSOLESCES (what does it make obsolete?), RETRIEVE (what is retrieved?), and lastly, REVERSE (what does the technology reverse into if it is over-extended?).

With these 4 questions, we can analyze and understand the effects, the function of the technology or the media.

Personal Reflection on media culture class week 9 - Medium is the Message

This week class we learn about Marshall McLuhan's concept of media.

He came out a book call "Media is the Massage", he used "massage" instead of the word "message" it is because he discovered that the word "massage" is more suitable, more creative and more precise to represent his concept of media, "Mass-Age", as the mass media develops rapidly. Moreover, he said that technology is the extension of human body, for example fork and spoon is the extension of human's hands to grab something to eat.

The extension of technology causes amputation, which eliminate the olden or inconvenient technology, e.g. automobile amputates bicycles, and it results the place develops in different manner.

Everything is media to us, even a small bulb of light. Why? It is because when a place with no light, no one would stay at that place, BUT if there is a light, there is a possible for people to stay or gather there, the message of the media "light" tells us people gathered there, there is the existence of people.

McLuhan also summarized his ideas of media by using "tetrad of media effects". It explains the effects of media by dividing into 4 different categories which are enhances, reverses, retrieves, and obsolesces.

Hot Media and Cold Media, previously known in Trimester 1 Media Appreciation class, but now is more briefly explained. Hot Media is a media which is low participation but easy to received the message within, while Cold Media is high in participation, we need to pay more attention, analyze it as it is not easy to receive and the message is more impact. "The harder we work to receive the message, the more we remember".

Critical Reflection on topic given - The Differences between Obscenity, Pornography, and Indecency 2

What's the differences between Obscenity, Pornography and Indecency anyway?

Well from what I know... Obscenity is something that is improper to show like a people being murdered, some gross scene, car crash etc etc... and the scene is being blocked or edited by the scene editor.

Pornography is media like magazines, novels, videos etc showing sexual and erotic acts. It may also be obscene as it is not suitable for underage.

Indecency is a law or rule to control the obscenity. Different country with different culture and rules and regulations, their indecency level will be not the same. Some country can accept certain obscenity, some are not, it is depends on the culture there and decide.

Critical Reflection on topic given - The Differences between Obscenity, Pornography, and Indecency 1

The definition of obscenity is something such as words, scene, act and etc are offensive, not suitable for certain group of people, gross to the senses and mind.

Pornography is a media that contains erotic behavior to cause sexual excitement.

Indecency is a state or quality of being unseemly and immodest.

Critical Reflection on topic given - What is Media Literacy? 2

Why is the Media Literacy important to us as FCM student?

We, the FCM student, besides studying designs and arts, we need to study media as well, as media, art and design can't be seperated from each other. In order to convey the messages better in our art and design, we need and must study Media Literacy, we must study the culture around the world, know what had happened in this world, evaluate the informatin and recreate it into a better form.

Media Literacy keeps us updated as we need to keep up the pace of the information around the world, but somehow it is quite hard as the information is developing rapidly. Even so, we still need to learn everyday so that we're not outdated and be skillful as well.

Critical Reflection on topic given - Media Stereotype 2

From my experience... others stereotypes that I've seen in movies are such as cowboy hat usually represents cowboy, a lonely ranger; a person who wears formal suit represents mafia, business man; a dirty boy represents poor, always wander around the streets; boys who have plaster on their face are probably "fighters", and so on and so forth...

Critical Reflection on topic given - Media Stereotype 1

What is Media Stereotype?

It is often used in advertising, entertainment, any media industries etc, for audience to understand the information as soon they accept. Stereotypes act like giving the audience an image about certain people or certain group, usually relating to their culture, class, race, ethnic, and so on and so forth.

Critical Reflection on topic given - Do you believe in what's in the internet? 2

My second post's reason will be YES.

Yes, it is because we can compare those information, even a tiny little bit of "doodles", "scribbles", "notes", and etc etc... ... and all may become ONE great information that everyone might need. As I said in the previous post, we need to know how to judge these information.

Besides, these information may related to our daily life, they affect us. We can discuss, criticize what is happening and it might have the power to change the world. World change, because of us, the human being, who have lots of thinking and ideas which can change the world. For example, if we say that we've discovered new things, we can share and others might have the interest and continue the explore. New things keep on coming, information keep on updating, it is all because of the media.

Critical reflection on topic given - Do you believe what's in the Internet? 1

Do you believe in what is on the internet?? Well... I'm can't say yes or no... because both is possible. In my first post of this topic, I'll say NO.

The reason I said no is because the internet is too convenient that everyone can post something or edit, or even create his/her own website. For example blog and some unpopular news website. Now, everyone can post anything they like, and we can't just believe what is in the internet is true. Some are just rumors, some are just what they thought, and some are even lies. We need to learn how to judge these information in the internet.

Critical reflection on topic given - Social Ice-cream 2

How this phenomenon(social ice-cream) affects us?

It has a big influence in our daily life. As the technology develops, majority of the people can't survive without internet. Internet let us invlove in social network which we can interact with others by just clicking on the internet. Even we can survive without internet, we can't catch up what's the latest information or news in the world, or worse, we can't communicate with each other.

Critical reflection on topic given - Social Ice-cream 1

I like the presentation of social ice-cream. It's creative and unique. Although it is simple, but it conveys the messages clearly and simple.

In my opinion, the producer of this "social ice-cream" use this kind of presentation to talk about the current social media. Instead of differeant kinds of ice-cream, there are actually blogs, podcasts, video sharing, social network etc. People love to share their thoughts to the world, in order to communicate with other people. By sharing, all people are actually interacting with each others, this is what a society or community works.

Personal reflection on media culture class week 4 - Media and Society

From this week's class, i've learned that media has a great power within itself. Media not only affects our daily life, opinion, perspective, thinking etc, it is also provide us information, entertain us as well. Besides, media will form lots of community among ourselves by gathering a group of people with same thinking.

Media can be categorized into 2 categories which are Hot Media and Cool Media.
Hot Media is a media with big influential effect to us and requires lots of thinking from us to accept it; while Cool Media is a media with less influential effect and do not requires lots of thinking.

Nevertheless, media are spread by 2 kinds of model which are "elitist" and "populist".
Elitist, for example like political member, spread information or media with the effect of discrimination, which will break apart of ourselves into different communities and parties; while populist, for example celebrities, share their media or information by the liking of ourselves, they give us what we want, more likely to entertain us and fulfill our desires and needs.

From what I know about Marxism, Karl Marx tried to fight against Capitalism at that time. It is because capitalism made the society into 2 groups which are Owner/Master and Worker/Slave.
And after he analyzed capitalism, socialism appeared. People fought for fair division and power.
